MARQUIS FAMILY || Santa Barbara, CA || Such a privilege to photograph brand new clients in what may be some of the final days in the home they've raised their children in, as they contemplate a job-related move out of town. Having met only briefly the day before when I came by to have a look at their house and the light, they welcomed me warmly and we spent an easy afternoon together. When Melissa mentioned she didn't want a single portrait of her family posed and smiling for the camera, I suspected we'd be a good fit. Our time was casual and natural, the three kids at once happily doing their thing with a camera in their faces and allowing themselves to be plucked away for a few requested portraits. Living in a town surrounded by so many wide-open, natural spaces, it's rare—apart from photographing newborns—that I ever shoot indoors. I found the experience fun and intimate and inspiring in many new ways, and hope my time with the Marquis' not only helped preserve so much of what I want them to remember when they move, but opens the door for more families to choose this special type of memory-making . . .
